| We
live in southern central Kansas, about 90 miles SW of Wichita. Our
town is at the crossroads of US highways #160/281. Medicine Lodge
was named after an Indian medical lodge. We celebrate the U.S and
the Five Great Plains Tribes signing of the Peace Treaty every three years.
The 2003 year it was from Sept. 28 thru the 30. We are also
the home of Carrie Nation, a devoted salon smasher.
Our
ranch was a Kentucky thoroughbred breeding ranch in the early 1900's.
The original barn, built in 1895, is still standing. We raise angus, angus/hereford
and angus/charolais cattle. This ranch has been owned by my family
since 1942. We have leases for hunting/fishing. See our site
for information.
We
started in the miniatures with a "push-button" gelding, that I showed the
first year ( 1997). and he did very well. We did halter, obstacle,
tried jumping and then Liberty. His tape was "Don't' Look Ethel"!!
and we loved it...since then he is semi-retired or waiting for a "younger"
owner to show him. (see geldings). After showing "Moon", I
knew I was hooked on miniatures. We now have an quality herd of 14
mares and two beautiful stallions, one black and white and one pinto.
We have sorrel paints, appy, and sorrel (red) in the herd. In selecting
our stock, we have 80% that were bought as yearlings and now next spring
will be having their babies. Most of the mares are AMHA/AMHR, we
prefer this, as several are leaning to the AMHR classes...
I
drove "Jimbo" (see geldings) in the parade and everyone just went wild.
Jimbo loves to see people and children love him too. He has taught me how
to drive and appreciate the "little" horse enthusiasm to "please the master".
We just do parades and pleasure home driving--nothing fancy..
Our
donkey family started in l994, with a couple of babies jacks. I traded
one for a jenny and then bought three more jenneys later. Then came
1 more jenny and jack. The past 4 years I have been getting two and
three jennys a year and have kept them back. Now next spring they
too will be having first-time babies... We have shown one jenny at
the Kansas State Fair for two years and both times she has been in the
overall championship, but competing against Mules--well, you know the rest
of the story--they took Champion and Reserve Champion. But we stood
tall among them! Ha!! |
